While Copenhagen is a little less sunny than our usual happy places, this old town has a lot of heart. And gives visitors a lot of reasons to smile. Plus there are beautiful beaches and canals to keep us water babies happy. Whether you’re stopping over on a whirlwind trip around Europe, or heading there for an extended stay, we definitely recommend adding it to your must-visit list.
Where we go for a top up of happiness in Copenhagen
One of the first things you’ll notice about Copenhagen is that it feels like something out of a fairy-tale. Especially for those of us who grew up in Australia, where the history isn’t as rich as it is in Europe. Nyhavn however, takes that one step further. It’s a beautiful waterfront district with large canals dividing stunning waterfront properties. These houses and businesses are all the same in their shape, but range in colours (usually bright). You may remember it as the place the Hans Christian Andersen grew up. While he is no longer hanging around, you can find countless restaurants and the people watching is at its best.
The Little Mermaid
More water. Typical. While lots of countries have huge monuments that are too big for the eyes to even see, Denmark has the little mermaid. The fairy tale theme continues. When you see her in the flesh (or metal) you realise just how small she is. And it makes you remember that to be impressive and worth travelling for, you don’t need to be something you’re not.
One for the inner child and the lover of the arts. Tivoli Gardens is like Disneyland mixed with the Arts Centre here in Melbourne. As you explore the theme park, you can take rides and eat fairy floss type snacks, or you can sit in front of a stage and watch a stunning ballet performance. It really has something for everyone.
The Long Lunch
The Danish love a long lunch, spent with friends, over a huge spread. Open sandwiches are a must there, where you top them with anything and everything. Just like many of their European neighbours, food is to be enjoyed and savoured with those you love. Whether out and about or in the comfort of someone’s home.
